Development and Implementation of a Measurement and Control System for Dry Fiber Laying and Post-Consolidation

Your mission is to support us in the development of a pilot system for dry fiber web laying and post-consolidation. The final system will consist of several key components:

  • A laying unit that separates the fibers and distributes them evenly on a conveyor belt.
  • A belt unit that must move at a constant speed to enable continuous operation.
  • An extraction system located beneath the belt, which applies a vacuum to fix the fibers onto the belt.
  • Rehumidification to introduce small amounts of water into the fleece.
  • Pre-compaction to generate initial stability of the laid fleece.
  • A post-consolidation unit that can be heated in addition to applying pressure to enable drying and consolidation of the paper web.
  • An inline measurement system that continuously monitors thickness, residual moisture, and basis weight to ensure product quality.

Your task is to develop a comprehensive control and regulation concept that enables smooth coordination of all components and ensures stable, continuous operation with defined target values. You will closely collaborate with different team members responsible for individual modules and design a concept that can be integrated into the system after the mechanical setup is complete.

Your mission

Your tasks

  • Development of an initial theoretical concept based on the influencing parameters of the individual components
  • Evaluation of the required measurement parameters, taking into account the potential for energy efficiency assessment of the entire system
  • Design of a control concept for the entire unit based on measured product properties (basis weight, thickness, residual moisture)
  • Selection of suitable control software, preferably open-source and easily extendable
  • Consideration of scalability to ensure the concept remains applicable during future scale-up of the system
  • Registered master’s student in measurement, control and regulation technology, process engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Initial experience in control engineering
  • Basic knowledge of programming control software is an advantage
  • Interest in actively participating in the development of a completely new technical system from the ground up.
  • Independent, structured working style with a passion for applied research.
