Our research project FOREST

Pioneering the paper industry 4.0

Under the roof of the Modellfabrik Papier, digital twins of the industrial paper production process are being developed in the FOREST project, short for: Framework for Resource, Energy, Sustainability Treatment in Paper Production. The research and industry partners involved are developing a modular software framework that includes physical process models and virtually maps the processes and energy supply of a real paper mill.

Digital twins for climate-neutral paper production

For the first time, virtual models for the sub-processes of paper production, from stock preparation to winding, and the energy supply systems are being compiled in an overall system as part of FOREST. The modular software framework forms the basis for digital twins of real paper machines. The link with machine and process data from ongoing operation makes it possible to visualize the actual state of the plant in detail and to create forecasts. This means that plant areas with high optimization potential can be identified during operation and changes in operation or conversions can be tested and evaluated before implementation.

Accelerating transformation

The framework also makes it possible to model future developments and the influence of new conditions, such as changes in the way energy is provided or in costs. Furthermore, product-related climate footprints can be created with the aim of optimizing processes, plants and energy supply and reducing emissions. This provides the paper industry with an innovative tool to accelerate the transformation towards climate-neutral production and increase its competitiveness.

FOREST –
Framework for a digital twin in the paper industry

For a green future for the paper industry

„The digital framework enables effective process optimization, a targeted assessment of possible impacts and thus a forward-looking benefit assessment for the transformation of the paper industry towards climate-neutral production.“

„Our project provides a deeper understanding of the papermaking process and helps to optimize it further in the direction of sustainability. In this way, we support the paper industry on its way to climate neutrality and, in doing so, lay the foundation for the future of paper companies in Germany.“
